Senator Carmen Fernandez Introduced a Resolution Supporting the Congresswoman's Efforts to Obtain a Philippines Visa Waiver Program

January 29 2004--During their tenure in office both Senator Fernandez and Congresswoman Bordallo have begun a dialogue to enhance Guam's chance of obtaining a Philippines Visa Waiver Program. This is an effort that Senator Fernandez feels very strongly about and therefore sponsored a resolution to support the Congresswoman's efforts.     Senator Fernandez stated in introducing the resolution, "It is unfortunate that many of Guam's residents of Filipino ancestry must wait for years on end for family member's in the Philippines to obtain a visa to visit them on Guam."

Currently, the United States Consulate in the Republic of the Philippines receives over 100,000 applications annually for immigrant visas and the current backlog of applications include those dated as far back as 1995. A Philippines Visa Waiver program would ease the burden by shortening the process of obtaining a visa. Senator Fernandez also stated, "This is a win-win situation for Guam not only benefiting those who wish to visit family members on Guam, but also benefiting Guam's ailing tourism industry."

The Senators' resolution is designed to insure Members of Congress, and the Department of Homeland Security are fully aware that Guam supports the Congresswoman's efforts to move forward with a Philippines Visa Waiver Program as quickly as possible.
